CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE EUROPEAN DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN THE HUMAN AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ‘EUROPE

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
FOR THE EUROPEAN DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN THE HUMAN AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ‘EUROPE IN ITS GLOBAL CONTEXT – RE-INVENTING EUROPE IN THE WORLD’

HUMBOLDT-UNIVERSITÄT ZU BERLIN (HU)
ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI SCIENZE UMANE (SUM) CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY (CEU)

The European Doctoral Program (EDP –www.europeandoctoralprogramme.com )
is an advanced international study programme for doctoral research and training in the Human and Social Sciences launched by the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane, the Central European University, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in 2010 and aiming at the establishment of a European doctoral school and a European doctoral degree. The third curriculum of the EDP in the Social Sciences explores the question of how the political, economic and cultural construction of “Europe” has been shaped by and has shaped its global context.

Responsible for the running of the third curriculum are the partner institutions in Berlin, Budapest and Florence. The curriculum for the Joint PhD, which is mainly based in these three partner sites, foresees the fellows to work in at least three different countries by following courses on theory, methodology and research design in the full partner schools, while annual joint seminars and mobility periods between the sites will bring the fellows together and will give them the opportunity to exchange and debate. The joint seminars will be organized in turn by the partners and will focus on the three strands of the curriculum, sociology, political science and political economy. Further courses taught by experienced and expert staff in all sites including Paris will offer fellows an unequalled opportunity to develop a reflexive view on Europe.

Thematically, the EDP will focus on the processes of inclusion and exclusion in Europe and on its borders. By relating them to on-going processes of democratic institution building, which are mediated by cultural traditions and ideologies and triggered by collective action and mobilization, the EDP will provide a particular competence to understand the dynamics of processes which situate Europe in the world.

Four doctoral students will be admitted to the course for a start in October 2012. The course lasts three years. During the first year students will be integrated in the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Further members will be admitted in the following years. The grants are of a value of € 20,000 per academic year, including contributions, insurances and taxes to be paid by the universities and/or the doctoral student. Accommodation costs have to be met by the doctoral students.

Please see the document attached for further details.

Application deadline: May 29, 2012, 11 p.m. (23:00), Central European Time
